Islam places great emphasis on cleanliness and considers it important for healthy living. Cleanliness is closely related to health, personal hygiene, clothes, homes and especially the cleanliness of the heart and soul. A pure or clean heart motivates a person to be moral and close to Allah the Almighty. The matter was the topic of today's Khutbah or Friday sermon titled, "Maintaining Cleanliness".
In the Khutbah, the Imam or prayer leader highlighted that Islam places great importance on both physical and spiritual cleanliness. This is because cleanliness is the main factor in all work or tasks, particularly when one performs ibadah or religious obligations and acts. To begin with, before performing solat or prayer, one must clean the body and perform ablution. Islam also places equal importance on spiritual cleanliness or purity. One could achieve this by avoiding bad behavior or deeds such anger, jealousy, being stingy, being too talkative, eating too much, arrogant, loving worldly things, self-centred and showy. The prayer leader warned one would not be able to avoid all these with first purifying or cleaning the heart. A person who fails to suppress the bad things
